These two main factors attract hundreds of young people every year, not only from other Swiss cantons but also from abroad, who move to Ticino to begin or complete their school and university education.

Among the best institutes present on the territory of Lugano and the Lugano area there is certainly the well-known American School Tasis, in Montagnola, Via Collina d'Oro 15. The Institute was founded in 1956, with the aim of creating a school that would give students from all over the world the opportunity to find each other and broaden their knowledge, thus generating greater understanding and empathy among them, creating a better and fairer world.

The Collina d'Oro in Lugano was identified by Mrs. M. Crist Fleming, as the most suitable place to train students from all over the planet in the classical values of western civilisation. The school's founder strongly believed that beauty could inspire young people and spur them on to give their best, and that being surrounded daily by culture and beauty was the basis for pursuing one's educational goals.

The values of the institute translate into a great respect for the past and the future of the area in which the school has always been located. For this reason, Tasis has always wanted to open itself up as much as possible to the local community and in particular to the Collina d'Oro, offering the population the opportunity to use the school library and to participate in the numerous cultural events that the school has always organised. The Tasis Institute is an international family that today welcomes young people from all over the world, in an educational community that has always promoted a passion for excellence, respect and mutual understanding.

Consistent with the vision of its founder, Ms M. Crist Fleming, the school is committed to passing on the heritage of Western civilisation and world cultures; the important creations, great achievements, traditions and ideals of the past, offer insights into the present and nurture the best hopes for the future.

The school constantly strives to balance the pursuit of knowledge with a love of wisdom and the promotion of learning skills, skilfully combining a challenging academic programme with opportunities for artistic endeavour, physical and sporting activities and social services. Growing in the value of each individual and the importance of building lasting relationships, Tasis School seeks to embody and promote the values of personal responsibility, civility, compassion, justice and truth.

The hallmark of this school is certainly the style imprinted by the founder and entrepreneur Mrs. M. Crist Fleming: her ability to see and grasp educational opportunities and to respond to needs and requirements with boldness and decisiveness were fundamental to the success of the school. Thanks to the work of the founder, Tasis today enjoys a culture that encourages and rewards initiative and creativity; in addition to the latter, a serious educational journey necessarily requires patience, flexibility, a positive attitude and perseverance. Mrs. Fleming's vision has continued through the development of the Tasis Foundation: this is a non-profit educational foundation that aims to perpetuate the values and ideals of the Tasis Institute.

International School of Ticino

The International School of Ticino offers study programmes for primary school, middle school and high school. The primary school curriculum aims to build young people's cultural understanding and promote an international mentality. Throughout the academic year, students' investigation is guided by conceptual ideas that are linked to six interdisciplinary themes of global relevance; bridges between the different disciplines are promoted and developed in order to build knowledge, understanding and skills.

The middle school curriculum, on the other hand, is designed to encourage students to take increasing responsibility for their own learning process, gaining awareness and using acquired knowledge and skills independently. In high school, there are two distinct phases, each lasting two years: in grades 10 to 11, students work towards the completion of the international baccalaureate programme.

In this phase, there is a combination of compulsory and optional subjects. At the end of Grade 11, students receive MYP credit for all courses taken in the two years. In Grades 12 and 13, students will take the IB Diploma Programme, which is recognised by universities around the world.
