The best country in which to live and work is Switzerland: the annual report by the well-known HSBC banking group has declared the Swiss Confederation to be the country with the best quality of life.

Once again this year, the major banking group has compiled its personal classic of the countries characterised by the best quality of life and work, analysing data on a sample of more than 18,000 people, who emigrated to 163 different places respectively, examining in particular living standards and the quality and competitiveness of salaries.

In the group's personal ranking for the year 2019, Switzerland firmly takes first place for quality of life and wage competitiveness. The winning country overtakes Singapore in second place, a country that had always triumphed in this singular ranking for the past five years.

The Swiss Confederation climbed an impressive seven positions, taking the top spot in the ranking. According to the banking group's analysis, many people who have decided to move to Switzerland in recent years (82 per cent, according to the research), have made the choice mainly for professional reasons, significantly improving their standard of living and income compared to their country of origin.

According to a survey conducted by the well-known financial newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, the average Swiss annual salary is 111,587 dollars; the world average is 75,966 dollars. Switzerland's great success is certainly also influenced by the political economic system, and the environmental conditions should not be underestimated. Singapore, a winning country in the last five editions of the ranking, takes second place for 2019, thanks to its excellent education and academic system.

Following on the podium of the best countries in terms of quality of life and competitive salaries is Canada: the country undoubtedly excels due to its characteristic, extremely open reception system. Another surprise in the 2019 edition of the research conducted by the banking group is Spain, placed fourth: what probably influenced the Iberian Peninsula's success was the country's ability to guarantee the right work-life balance.

Anyone looking for a better work-life balance, a high quality of life and extremely competitive salaries should look to Switzerland as a potential country to relocate to and seek professional opportunities.

All the advantages of moving to Switzerland
The phenomenon of migration to Switzerland, especially by Italians moving to the country for professional reasons, has been present for many years. The Swiss Confederation is a country that has never experienced an economic crisis in its history and today is one of the few countries that can offer an extremely high quality of life.

In all the cantons of the Confederation, the level of unemployment is almost non-existent and the country has the most competitive salaries in the world. Moving to and living in Switzerland means, first and foremost, having the chance to live in a special country that offers many opportunities: the federal nation is divided into 26 cantons, i.e. real federal states.

Canton Ticino is in fact the state known as Italian: within its territory lie the municipalities of Lugano, Bellinzona, Locarno, Mendrisio, Chiasso, Minusio, Losone, Capriasca, Massagno and Biasca. The official language of Canton Ticino is Italian and the Lombard language (in diglossia with Italian), in its variants and Ticino dialect, spoken throughout the territory.

The Ticinese dialect variant is Sopraceneri, while the Comasca variant is Sottoceneri, both belonging to the western branch; it should be noted, however, that these idioms are not officially recognised.

Swiss economy
The economy of the Swiss Confederation has always been particularly developed: although Switzerland occupies only the 38th position in the world in terms of GDP, the country can boast the fourth highest GDP per capita in the world, which can be calculated at around 21,000 US dollars.

The Swiss economy, also due to the scarcity of natural resources and the particular geography of the country, is mainly developed in the service sector and in particular in financial services. For this reason, many of the people who decide to move to Switzerland are professionals and specialists in the economic and financial sector or in the service sector.

The main advantages of living in Switzerland
Here are the main advantages that make many people consider moving to Switzerland.

The high quality of life is certainly one of the main reasons why Switzerland is particularly sought after by foreigners; suffice it to say that Zurich and Geneva are two cities that can boast one of the highest quality of life in the world. The two cities also top all rankings for liveability in urban settings.

Multi-culturality is another aspect that drives many workers and professionals to move to Switzerland. The Confederation is one of the European countries with the highest rate of immigration: the country has always been accustomed to welcoming foreign workers on its territory, even if it may sometimes happen that you come across people who are extremely reserved, although these phenomena are definitely circumscribed. Moreover, since three official languages are spoken on Swiss territory, job opportunities increase considerably.

Another important element influencing the quality of life in Switzerland is the efficiency of services: postal services, public transport, administration and property management are practically impeccable. Switzerland is also a country that is characterised by an excellent sense of civic duty and meritocracy, the latter being a principle that prevails in the Swiss working world and which has undoubtedly contributed to creating an efficient and effective society.

Another important factor in determining the quality of life in the country is a low crime rate in all the cantons of the Confederation; in all the cities of Switzerland you will often see bicycles parked without chains and a general perception of safety and tranquillity.

The country's geographical location is also particularly strategic, given its proximity to Italy, Austria, Germany and France. If you are passionate about nature and love living in a healthy environment, Switzerland is an ideal country to enjoy relaxing mountain excursions. For all Italians planning to move to Switzerland, it is worth mentioning that Lugano is a safe haven for Italian families who decide to relocate and start a new life.

The lake is fantastic for outdoor excursions and offers a unique natural environment. In Lugano and the entire Ticino Canton in general, one can enjoy the best of Mediterranean and international cuisine and the best Italian and international wine selection. From a scholastic and academic point of view, Lugano and the Lugano area can boast the presence of public and private educational institutions that are among the best in the world.

Generally speaking, we can say that the advantages in terms of quality of life in Lugano are more or less the same as those experienced throughout the country. Many Italians today decide to move to Switzerland and in particular to the Canton of Ticino, due to the fact that it is the only canton where the official language is Italian. Canton Graubünden, on the other hand, is the only trilingual canton in the Swiss Confederation, where Italian, German and Romansh are spoken.
